Bear Viewing

Brown bear viewing

This is an exciting tour which offers you places for observation of the brown bear in the most virgin areas of the Rodopi mountains.

• We offer you a 5-day trip - dates available from April to November.

•This program gives you the opportunity to see other wild animals and birds besides the brown bear - wolves, red deer, etc.

•Optional activities - kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, cycling, fishing or trip to the Thracian sanctuaries around Kurdjali.

Price: 790 EUR

This program runs in the Bulgaria's remote Rodopi Mountains - the most extensive mountain range in Bulgaria. Due to its remoteness and the extensive range of habitats, the Rodopi boasts an amazing number of endemic plants, large stable populations of wolves, bears and other rare mammals, as well as an outstanding mix of birds that includes 37 species of raptor. In 2005 the territory was declared as an area of ornithological importance by BirdLife International. It was proclaimed a CORINE area in 1989 due to its European importance for the preservation of rare and endangered localities, plants and animals. Here one can visit villages in which life goes on as it was senturies ago; where travel can offer a true insight into Europe as it was and will never be again.

ITINERARY

Day 1
Transfer from the airport to the town of Devin. Check in the hotel and meeting your local guide.

Days 2-4
During these three days you will visit the bears’ natural environment, you will observe bears’ path and bears’ traces and you will have the opportunity to see bears. There is an option of visiting a bear’s den.

Hiding places have been built because bears generally go out of their dens at night. We usually stay inside the hiding places till the bear appears but it is advisable to stay till the morning.
Hiding places have been built in the ground and have been made of stone and coated with wood. There are chairs and plank-beds for lying down as well as a bathroom, usually for 6 people. There is a night vision device available by which you can easily watch the bears.
Other animals can also be watched during this tour such as wolves, Balkan chamoises, red deers, wild boars, does, brown hares, badgers, wildcats, etc., as well as many rare bird species such as wood grouses, black woodpeckers, green woodpeckers, white-backed woodpeckers, hazel grouses, golden eagles, nutcrackers, etc.

Chance to see a brown bear:

90% to see a bear/ bears
100% to see steps and traces of bears

As well as night-time bear-watching from the hide, you will have the chance to explore the mountains and lakes of this remote spot. There are options to go fishing or kayaking in the numerous Rodopean lakes; to go hiking to the famous Trigrad gorge and Yagodina cave; to hire a bike or go horseback riding in the forests. You may wish to extend your stay and visit the Thracian sanctuaries of Tatoul, Perperikon and the Cave "Vulva" in the area of Kurjali town.

Not far away from Devin you may visit the dancing bears rehabilitation park. This is a mini-reserve for animals formerly owned by gypsy bear-trainers. The project commenced in May 1999: its concept is that animals that have been traditionally used by gypsy bear-trainers to gather alms (the bear’s guide plays the rebec or other instrument and the bear dances) to be returned to their natural environment. The dancing bears’ park is financed by the Four paws foundation.

Please note that the banks located within the arrivals hall at Sofia airport are typically closed at the weekends, so please make sure you obtain Bulgarian currency either in your home country or before passing through customs into the arrivals hall. Shops and restaurant in the small villages rarely have much in the way of small change and often refuse to accept larger denomination notes. Credit cards and traveler’s cheques are not a convenient way of payment.
ATM are available in Sofia and Devin.
Tipping (leader and local staff)
If you receive good service it is customary to tip staff in Bulgaria in appreciation of their help and friendliness, although this is in no way compulsory.
